Bookbinding is a process that, in its simplest terms presents content and materials on paper as an experience that is interpreted and affected by the viewer. I am drawn to bookbinding because it links organization and beauty, providing a structure that is organized in a certain way and that uses aesthetically pleasing papers and stitches.
My books incorporate a variety of stitches, often using an open-spine Coptic stitch (a self-reinforcing knotted visible structure). There are any number of ways to vary the final result, including paper selection for pages & the weight of that paper, whether edges are deckled (torn) or cut, decorative papers, end papers, thread color, stitching style... the options are endless.
I use acid-free archival materials in my books, and create the books for a
variety of uses: journaling, photo albums, guest books, and much more. Most importantly, all of my books are designed to be used and kept... and enjoyed!
Other materials I use:
- acid-free bookbinding board
- letterpressed, handmade, and machine made decorative papers
- adhesive that remains flexible and won't crack over time
- ribbon, photos, found materials
